About Central URC Hove

Todays' Church

  • We are part of the Southern Synod of the United Reformed Church in England.

  • We are part of the Hove and Portslade Pastorate, which includes 2 other United Reformed Churches: Hounsom Memorial URC (in Hangleton) and Portslade URC (in Portslade).

  • The Pastorate shares a minister, Rev Alex Mabbs, who started his ministry with us in September 2006.

  • Members and regular worshippers at Central URC continue to be at the centre of many community activities in Central Hove

Church History

  • In July 1980, two URC churches (Cliftonville United Reformed Church and St Cuthberts United Reformed Church) joined to form Central United Reformed Church.

  • The first Minister of the newly formed Central URC, was Rev Brian Stone.

  • The new church was located in the former Cliftonville building and by November 1986, a new sanctuary located on the first floor of that building was dedicated.

  • After Rev Brian Stone moved to new pastures, the Church remained without a minister for several years, in a period known as Interregnum

  • Rev Peter Elliott was called to minister to us and stayed until he retired. He still remains active in local churches and has continues to lead some of our services.

  • After a few years without a minister, we have worked with the other churches in the Hove & Portslade Pastorate and together have called Rev Alex Mabbs to led us.
