Our Ministers

 Pastorate Minister

Rev Alex Mabbs (day off: Friday) Tel: 01273 549922
I am the minister of Central, along with Rev. Roger Wood. Together we serve the three churches of the Hove and Portslade Pastorate.  I am married to Louise and we have three children.  I am interested in God, people, practical theology, music, gardening and Old Testament literature. My vision is to see churches that are vibrant communities of authentic faith and life, with people engaging their growing faith with the needy world. Jesus is on a mission to save the world and I want to be a part of that. Oh, and did I mention that I like cake?

Associate Minister

Rev Roger Wood (day off: Thursday) Tel: 07946 958301
I am the other minister with Alex.  I am married to Kim - we married late, so no children.  My interests are communicating the truths of the Christian gospel in a meaningful 21st Century way, the Arts, History and Cosmology.  Vision: as above for Alex - although I'm not quite so obsessed with cake!

We have been running the FURY group since April 2009, and are really excited about what God is doing for the Youth in this church.  We like to organise interesting events for the young people, involving their ideas in the process, and are looking forward to seeing how they develop their ideas about life, faith and community.

Our Elders

 Adrian Ball
I became a Church member and gave my life to Christ at the age of 15 following membership of the Boys Brigade which had a real impact on my life. Since transferring my membership from another URC where I had been an Elder for many years, I was invited to be a serving Elder at Central. Following on from this I was appointed to the chairmanship of the Outreach Committee. I believe Central has the ability to serve the community in all areas of the Christian Faith and my vision is to see that fulfilled

My family has been connected to the church since 1863 when my great grandfather became the Minister. I moved away for some years which helped me learn about other churches and ways of worship. I came back when I married Colin, we have two sons, James and Andrew. They are both married and have two children each. We are very lucky that our daughters-in-law let us take a full part in the care of the children. I run the parent and toddler group with Alison and Jill, which is great fun. It is wonderful to see so many people coming into the building. I help run the Senior section at Girl's Brigade, and the 3-7yrs on a Sunday morning. With the aid of a very lively and committed group [some of them should be! especially little urn and the beater!] I run the Social Activities Committee. I also spend increasing amounts of time with my mother who is getting frail and a bit forgetful. I look forward to seeing, and being part of a growing Congregation and helping with the development of the buildings to make Central a real Christian voice and a visible presence in Hove.

Married to Suzanne and with three children (or 'young people' as they are now) I have been worshipping at Central since 2004 (although Suzanne has a much, much longer history in this church !). Always keen to serve and help I have been the church treasurer once they realised I am an acccountant by trade, and, subsequently, I was elected as an Elder. We are indeed going through challenging times, as many churches are. However, positioned as we are, literally in the middle of the bustling and vibrant town centre of prosperous Hove, it will be fascinating to see how God acts through us and our church facilities so that our neighbours will be enthused to join with us - and not just on a Sunday but in the other activities and groups that go on in a typical week. There is much potential. Oh yes, we are also challenged through diminishing financial resources, so if you can spare a couple of bob .......maybe we can sell some of Alex's cakes, they are very good.

I have been married to Jane since 1976, we have 4 children all who have been in either Girls or Boys Brigade.  Having been blessed in life, I am particularly keen to encourage others to share in God's goodness and love.  As chairman of the Building Committee, I am keen to see a new and flourishing community centre to evolve here at Central, so all people, whatever their situation, can share in God's fullness together.

Hi, I have been worshipping at Central since 1990. I am married to Jinny and we have three lovely daughters, Rebekah, Abigail and Naomi. As a keen amateur musician, I sing in the choir and occasionally play the violin for worship. I was recently called to be an elder and I especially enjoy the pastoral and service side of Church life. I look forward to being part of God's exciting plans for the future here. I find the words and music to "In Christ Alone" particularly inspiring.
